DRESSED TO DECEIVE. Don Juan AND THE PROBLEM OF EVIL (17TH CENTURY)

  • LEONARDA RIVERA UNAM

Abstract

This paper pretends to analyze some similarities and the differences between the devil of the Baroque Theater and Don Juan of the 17th Century, emphasizing some aspects that the public of the time used to associate with the personification of Evil. The Literature of the Spanish Golden Age not only record the anthropomorphic transformation of the Devil, but also shows the moment in which the Demon of Renaissance and medieval iconography begins to coexist with the demons that walk in the Theaters and “Corrales” of the Baroque dressed as gallant or with animal skins.
