El fifí y su chofer: control social, homosexualidad y clase en un periódico del México posrevolucionario

Abstract

A reading of the journal El Chafirete, published in 1923 in México City, analyzing the strategies deployed by this paper to construct the masculinity of bus drivers and chauffers, a masculinity enhanced by derogatory views on the capacities of women. One of the main contributors to this journal was poet Salvador Novo. The article analyzes the role of homoerotic desire in the discourse directed to drivers, as well as its relationship with class differences between the driver and his clients.
