Abstract

The study proposes an examination of the ways in which the main character of La inocencia castigada of María de Zayas is subjected in the work. Using theories of subjection by Judith Butler and Julia Kristeva, the article analyzes the four key moments in which the character is converted into a subject (assujetissement). By means of an examination of the physical forms of subjection, the study shows that the main character’s psychic liberation takes place at the end of the novel when she is locked up in a convent.
