The Body in Juan José Arreola's novel La feria: repression by Catholic Church and ludic defiance
Abstract
This article investigates the role of religion in Juan José Arreola’s novel La feria. Drawing on studies of power and the body, it examines the bodies, illnesses and sins of the characters in religious contexts. It sustains that the emphasis on bodies demonstrates submission to the dominance of the Catholic Church. At the same time, the fair in the novel celebrates the body to confront such power.Downloads
