Homosexuality in Mexico in the late nineteenth century
Abstract
This essay analyzes, through texts of different genres, such as novel, essay, article, stories, memoirs and newspaper articles, the life and customs of Mexico City’s gay population in the late nineteenth century, which seemed to move casually and even carefree, it could be said, in a city that enjoyed the progress and modernity of any major European city. In this study, I aim, as a paleontologist does, to reconstruct through the pieces found, the body of homosexuality during the Porfiriato before 1901. The essay is divided into six sections: a) The 41 Ball; b) Historical context; c) The journalistic scandal; d) Taxonomy of the Mexican gay in the nineteenth century: from the chicken to the lizard-dandy; e) Pimps and prostitution; and f ) Homosexuality in prison. The investigation was intended to be as thorough as possible, regarding what is written on the subject in different genres.Downloads
