Abstract

In this article I establish an overview of modern Mexican poetry over four poetry anthologies: Antología de los 50 (1952) and Poetas jóvenes de México (1955), both compiled by Jesus Arellano, Antonio Castro Leal’s La poesía mexicana moderna (1953) and Max Aub’s Poesía mexicana 1950-1960 (1960). The main result of reading different poets and its poems in an historical context is the arisen of a modern Mexicanity. Each one of the anthologies reveals and original view of modernity in poetry depending upon a specific objective and social position. I consider this type of studies to be of importance in the field because of the diversity in creation and its criticism that points out, one such which came to be dismissed the very next decade with the edition of another anthology: Poesía en movimiento (1966).
